The Parliament House of Budapest

The Parliament House of Budapest is located on the bank of the Danube River, on the Pest’s side. This construction is one of the most impressive and symbolic tourists could find in Budapest during their vacation in Hungary, and therefore it is very recommendable not to miss the chance of meeting it.

The Parliament building was constructed towards endings of the 19th century and officially opened in 1902, becoming famous as the largest of its kind in the entire world. This construction has a width of 118 meters and a length of 268 meters, counting with 690 rooms, and a great amount of staircases which together add more than 20 kilometers. As it can be seen, this is a very impressing construction, and an attraction which all tourists, but specially those interested in architecture or design should not miss during their visit to this city.

The architectonic style of this Parliament building is clearly Neo Gothic. It was designed by Imre Steindl who was inspired in other European parliaments, specially the Parliament of London, for it. The design of this construction started after the year 1867, when the Austro Hungarian Compromise was signed, and Hungary had its own Constitution. This explains the importance of this construction and the symbolism it has for the city and its inhabitants.

Besides its clear Neo Gothic style, the Parliament House of Budapest also shows a combination of other styles, having some Renaissance elements as well as Byzantine and Baroque influences. Most of the Baroque elements of this construction can be noticed at its interior, being a perfect example of it the main staircase hall.

The Parliament House, also locally known as the Orszaghaz, can be seen from many different points of the city. One of the most impressing views tourists could have on this construction is from the Fishermen’s Bastion. The Fishermen’s Bastion, located on the bank of the Danube and offering an amazing view on the city, is one of the best places for observing the Parliament building next to other surroundings constructions and being able to notice its impressive size from far.
