The city of Rhodes, located in the island of same name, is considered the most important city or capital of the Prefecture of the Dodecanese. This city counts with a population of approximately 60.000 inhabitants, although the amount of inhabitants that can be found in it tends to increase during summer months when many summer houses become inhabited.
Rhodes is famous not only in the Dodecanese but in the entire world by being where the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World was. The Colossus of Rhodes was a very impressing and large statue of Helios which was created around the year 290 BC. According to the information known from the time when this wonder was created, it was constructed in the interior of a structure of stone columns, and its completion took more than ten years.
The statue of Rhodes had a short existence, since it was destroyed in the year 224 by a disastrous earthquake. Its remains were left unchanged on the floor for more than 800 years, until the 7th century, when most of its different parts were sold by the Arabs to an Edessian buyer who needed almost 1000 camels to transport them.
Besides its historical importance, Rhodes also counts with many other attractive characteristics. This island is considered to be one of the most attractive and sunny ones in Greece and the entire Mediterranean.
